Abstract:
Fluidized Bed Combustion is a technique partir.ularly
applicable to the combustion of low grade fuels with high
ash nnd sulphur contents. This technique avoids slag forma-
tion which fouls the ordinary coal combustion henrths. It also
reduces if not eliminates, the qu?ntity of sulphur in flue
gases, which causes corrosion to the combustion and related
equipments.
For this study, a pilot fluidized bed combustor along-
with a heat recovery system was designed, fabricated in the
Workshop of PCSIR Laboratories, Lahore? The same was installed,
commissioned and successfully operated on various indiq?nous
coals. ?he combustor was subjected to a 72 hours continuous
test operation in which no manufacturing of any component was
noticed.
Various materials were tested for their suitability as
bed material but ultimately quartz was used for experiments
work. Also, various coal, coal feeds rates and bed m?terials
combustions were investiaated. Various dry absorbent for
sulphur dioxide were investigated and it was established the
complete removal of sulphur from flue gases was impossible evPn
at high absorbent sulphur value.

The theoretical baPis of the desian of fluidi?erl b?d
used were experimently tested for their apolicahilitiPs.
An outline for fluidized bed combustion and hP?t reco-
very system has been presented fer future guidance to the
identification of equipment units.
