1. This research project was undertaken to study the electronic spectra of various diatomic molecules so as to obtain various parameters which describe the structure of the molecules. Successful studies could be made of the following molecules:
BaH, ALH+, SrH, Na2 and LiH
Studies in the spectra of CaH at 2475 A0 and the analogous system of SrH could not be undertaken for want of time. The experimental set-up is in working order. Spectra of BaH in UV have been recorded by us. Similar conditions are needed in recording the spectra of CaH and SrH in UV region. This forms the part of the same project to be extended for another year.
2. An iron-neon hollow cathode source was acquired from Oriel Ltd, England to establish reliable iron standards. This work was successfully completed in the UV and the visible region and an Atlas has been prepared for reference to be used as standards.
3. Previously a resistance furnace was built and used by us in the study of absorption spectra of diatomic molecules. But this furnace could be used around 8000C and over a relatively short column. We have redesigned this furnace to obtain temperature of around 13000C over a length of about 4 meters. Kanthal wire was used as heating element. It has worked nicely and enabled us to record the absorption spectra of BaH in UV.
4. The King Type Furnace:
It has been fabricated at Pak.swiss training centre, Karachi and has been just completed in the last month of the project. This is a useful piece of apparatus which every standard spectroscopy Lab. Needs for making absorption studies. This will enable us to undertake many good experiments. It will be interest to note the various stages of its construction (see experimental section). |
