Abstract:
The effects of dimenhyrinate, prochlorperazine and cyclizine on the serum thyroid hormones and follicle stimulating hormone levels were studied in normal male rabbits for 14-days. Dimenhyrinate (Group B) and cyclizine (Group D) were given intramuscularly 10 mg and prochlorperazine (Group C) 5 mg / kg body weigh / day. Serum was collected at zero, 7 and 14 days and assays were carried out using standard methods. Results show a significant decrease (p< 0.05) in all the parameters measured at 14-day compared with the control group (Group A) except the effect of dimenhydrinate on T4 levels wherein it remained unchanged. It is speculated from these results that hypothalamus and pituitary gland functioning is affected by these drugs through modulation of neurotransmitters in CNS which results in significant decrease in serum T4, T3 and FSH levels.
